What does the EU mean to local Business?
Lib Dem members and guests had a very informative talk on this from Mike Mathews at Nifco in Eaglescliffe in August. Nifco produces very high quality components for the automotive industry and is dependent on exporting a large proportion of its goods. 55% of automotive parts made in this country are exported and other EU members are the biggest customers.
Mike pointed out that EU membership gives UK citizens the right to work and study in other member countries, brings £1.2trillion of investment to the UK, protects workers through the European Time Directive, gives UK industry a stronger voice in international negotiations, makes trading easier through unifying standards and removing tax barriers and outlawing cartels etc.
Mike urged us to campaign to stay in the EU for the sake of local jobs as well as for national considerations while working to reform those aspects of the EU which need reform.. Since meeting with us in August, Nifco have announced increased profits and more plans for growth http://tinyurl.com/p6laqju those plans need the UK to stay in the EU
We aim to arrange more of this kind of meeting so please let us know if you think of another topic or speaker, especially if you have a contact who might speak at such a meeting.
