NE Lib Dem conference emergency motion on steel industry

The annual conference of North East Lib Dems, meeting in Gateshead today (24th Oct), has unanimously agreed an emergency motion proposed by former Redcar MP Ian Swales calling for solidarity with Teesside's steel sector and for urgent Government action to support the steel industry and Teesside's economy following the closure of the SSI plant.

The agreed motion reads:

"Conference recognises that the steel industry has been integral to the Teesside economy for 150 years.

Conference regrets the closure of the SSI plant and the devastating impact on thousands of workers and their families, directly and indirectly.

Conference calls upon the Government to support  Teesside's remaining steel industry and to commit to helping those affected by the recent closure and to a wholesale redevelopment of the Teesside  economy."

Leader of Redcar and Cleveland Liberal Democrat councillor Josh Mason added:

"Our area is in crisis but if we are positive, ambitious, and receive the right level of government support, we have the passion and ability to rebuild and future proof against economic shocks. We need Government to pursue an industrial strategy that allows the steel sector and our region's economy to thrive."
